COLLEGIATE CHARITIES & DROP THE PUCK ON CANCER

Back in 2011, two (2) individuals from Indiana University, Bloomington, Greek system made contact with me about assisting in a hockey event in Bloomington, Indiana.  Charlie Herr (Sigma Chi) and Logan Davis (Beta), along with myself, helped develop what is now known as Drop the Puck on Cancer.

Over the past nine (9) years, I have had the chance to work with some really awesome individuals in the Greek systems around the country, but most notably at Indiana University, my alma mater.  I truly have enjoyed this time, which started as a few hours per week and now has turned into hundreds and hundreds of hours each year.  But, the end result – the donations – have been well worth the hard work.  Over Four Hundred Thousand Dollars ($ 400,000) during the past nine (9) years has been raised and donated to multiple causes, including (some of the following):

  • American Brain Tumor Association
  • American Cancer Society
  • University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital
  • Camp Kesem – University of Missouri
  • Central Ohio Prostate Cancer Awareness
  • Disabled American Veterans – Columbus, Ohio Division
  • Many many more

     DROP THE PUCK -- 2015

After the first couple of years, Carl realized that it would take a more structured full-time operation to keep the Drop the Puck event moving in a positive direction.  In addition, he knew that he wanted to do three (3) things with Drop the Puck:

  1. Expand the Event – at Indiana University
  2. Expand the event in the local community – Bloomington, Indiana
  3. Expand Drop the Puck around the Midwest

In order to accomplish the three (3) goals, Carl created Collegiate Charities, LLC, which was the so-called “heavy lifter” day-to-day operation to expand the Drop the Puck events, and as well, to raise more money for the donations.

EXPANSION OF DROP THE PUCK – IU

Carl’s first goal to expand Drop the Puck at Indiana University was successful.  This past year, 2020, Drop the Puck had ten (10) houses participating in the event.  Sigma Chi, Beta, SAE, Acacia, Sig Ep, Phi Delts, Theta Chi, Pi Kapps, Sigma Pi and DU.

     EXPAND INTO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Carl’s second goal to expand into the local community has been successful.  Carl’s efforts have lead to yearly donations to the Bloomington Blades, a non-profit local youth hockey organization as well as other entities and individuals in the local community.

EXPAND DROP THE PUCK AROUND THE MIDWEST

Carl and his organization, Collegiate Charities, has expanded the competitive collegiate hockey event to multiple universities around the Midwest, to include the creation and formation of the following:

  • Power Play on Cancer – University of Minnesota
  • Slap Shot on Cancer --University of Missouri
  • Drop the Puck on Cancer –
    • DePaul University
    • Northwestern University
    • Toledo University
    • University of North Dakota
    • Ohio State University
    • Miami (of Ohio)
  • Sigma Freeze – Central Michigan
  • Freeze the Puck – University of Michigan

HOPE FOR HOOSIERS FOUNDATION

Carl, along with his wife, Angie, and two (2) Indiana University Sigma Pi’s came up with the concept of Hope for Hoosiers Foundation in 2018.  Carl has created the organization as an official LLC in the State of Indiana.  Carl’s goal is to have Hope for Hoosiers Foundatioin fully operational before the end of 2020.

COMING SOON, Carl is forming the Legal Division of Hope for Hoosiers Foundation, which will assist “low income” individuals in the Monroe County area, who have been impacted by COVID-19.   Carl’s team will include himself, as well as his Associate Attorney, Matt Fox, along with several Indiana University Law Students and Undergraduate Students.  More information will be coming soon.
